.NET Core now Supported by Foxit PDF SDK

by Conor Smith | October 23, 2019

.NET Core is now supported by Foxit PDF SDK!

The .NET Core Framework is the foundation for the future of the .NET project and is used to build cloud, device, and IoT applications across multiple platforms. It’s supported on Windows, Linux and Mac platforms. Introduced in 2016, the .NET Core Framework is an open-source and newly developed version of .NET. Read on as we take a look at .NET Core and how it stacks up against .NET and show you what our plans are for PDF SDK and .NET Core.

.NET Core vs .NET

NET Core and .NET differ from each other in many ways. .NET is a platform for .NET applications on Windows and is distributed on Windows. .NET Core is cross-platform and is optimized for modern application needs for developers and is distributed with the application.

.NET Core’s advantages are its cross-development capabilities which enable developers to integrate the UWP interface into Windows Forms and WPF. It’s also the successor of .NET and therefore boasts longevity vs .NET. .NET Core is lightweight meaning it offers high performance and scalability that .NET doesn’t offer. It’s hard to ignore the consistent updates and improvements being implemented in .NET Core, which makes staying with .NET a potential inhibitor on your company’s development and growth capabilities.

.NET’s advantages lie in the fact that you don’t have to do any additional learning (if you’re a .NET developer), and if you’re just maintaining apps that have already been created, then .NET offers that convenience. For .NET Core, it will take research and time to fully comprehend and introduce apps into your business process.

Features of .NET Core

  • Cross-platform: It is a cross-platform application that features in several platforms such as, Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems.
  • Consistent across architectures: The way the application works means that your code will run in the same conduct with a plethora of architectures, for example x86, x64, and ARM.
  • Command-line tools: With easy-to-use command-line tools, it is available for use in local development and continuous-integration scenarios.
  • Compatible: .NET Core is also congruent with the .NET Framework, Xamarin, and Mono, from .NET Standard.
  • High Performance: The introduction of ASP.NET Core and the Kestrel web server, ASP.NET has espoused as one of the fastest web application frameworks available on the market.
  • Open source: The .NET Core platform is open source, using MIT and Apache 2 licenses.
  • Supported by Microsoft: .NET Core is regularly updated by Microsoft ensuring it is a well-supported framework now and into the future.

The future for .NET Core and Foxit

The next step for Foxit PDF SDK for .NET Core is the upgrade to .NET Core 3 and support for Windows Form Applications. We are committed to following the roadmap for the Microsoft framework to help our customers migrate easily. Microsoft has recently announced that .NET 5 will be available in 2020. .NET 5 is set to replace .NET Core with its main goal to surpass and consume .NET Framework and .NET Core in the future.

.NET 5 will not associate with ASP.NET Web Forms, WWF, or WCF. Also, UWP doesn’t associate or have a major role in the future of .NET. The amount of time put into the development of .NET will only see the application go from strength to strength and become more common across business internationally.
